Kuyrl Stonepalm

A goliath the crew first met being turned away at Waterdeep's south gate, traveling with his wife. A guard mistook him for a giant and tried to bar entry; Fiz recognized him as a goliath — giant-kin, not a giant — and vouched for him, and the couple was let through. He said he was on his way to work for the ship-dealer Brindle, and swore he would remember the kindness. He gave no name at the gate; the crew learned it only when they found him again on the docks. "Cormeer" — heard variously as Cormir / Kermir / Cormyr — is his homeland, not his name.

He speaks Giant and no Common at all, and works Brindle's docks hauling two barrels at a time. He has a wife and a son in the city, and will not leave them exposed to his debt.

The pilgrimage. He is saving to travel north to the Spine of the World to see the great Oracle, which he believes "can grant any wisdom one desires, can answer any question." His own question is deeply personal and he will not share it with anyone. He carries a ledger booklet of his earnings and costs — and inside it, a map to the Oracle.

"A giant is needed to open the way." He insists the Oracle's seat is a place only for giants, and that as giant-kin he qualifies: "I am a giant. I can open the way." That makes him structurally necessary to the crew's route, not merely useful. He was awed by Zephyros's book of giant runes — material he had only ever known as oral tradition and scratches on stone — and a copy-for-copy trade was proposed: his map for a transcription of the runes.

The debt. He owes Brindle 80 gold and thinks of it as honest work he will eventually clear. Fiz audited the ledger and found otherwise: Brindle charges him for lodging and food against his wages, so the debt grows by roughly another 80 gold a year and can never be paid. Told this, Kuyrl smashed a barrel and paced in a fury. With an overseer approaching, the crew coached him to bellow them off the dock for cover, and left with his address — a one-room shack among many under the docks.
